The EMEA market for smartphone is up 28%, according to Canalys, that is. The monitoring and stats company has said that shipments have broken the 10mn barrier now, with Nokia accounting for about 80% of all smartphones sales.
RIM was also mentioned as a player here, and HTC are fast-approaching as being the vendor of choice for those looking for a WinMo device. Moto and Samsung are also playing in this area, but with much smaller shares. We cannot forget the impetus that Apple has gained of late, however, they and other smaller manufacturers only made up for 8% of the market, at the time the stats were gathered.
For me, the lines between smartphones and feature-phones are blurring on a weekly basis, giving rise to devices now that pack the computing power of a mobile internet device, with the portability of a feature/style phone - the new Samsung Omnia being a case in point!
Will everyone be rocking a touchscreen smarphone one day? It’s a scary thought……..!
